BSI probes another cop shooting
19/03/2003, JOHN TAVARES, Observer correspondent CAANAN HEIGHTS, Clarendon -- The Bureau of Special Investigation on Monday began an investigation into the circumstances under which 41-year-old Derrick Goffe was fatally shot by the police in Clarendon over the weekend. Goffe, affectionately called "Banana Man" and "Basket Man", earned a living by doing odd jobs for residents of his community. He was killed on the morning of March 15. A police source told the Observer that at about 5:45 last Saturday morning, the police were on special operations in Caanan Heights when they spotted three suspicious looking men. It is alleged that the men opened fire at the police, who then returned the fire. When the gun battle subsided Goffe was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest and he was taken to the May Pen Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the police said. A .380 pistol was allegedly taken from Goffe's body. On Monday, residents staged a demonstration along Trenton Road, near the vicinity of the Mineral Heights roundabout in the parish. The placard-bearing protesters claimed that Goffe was unjustly killed by the police. His sister Lorna Goffe, who was among the protesters, admitted that her brother was no angel but drew the line at accusations that he was a gunman. "If people sey mi bredda a t'ief mi would a sey yes, but if dem sey him a gunman mi would a sey no to dat," she sad. 19/03/2003 - Fonte: The Jamaica Observer / http://www.jamaicaobserver.com Spedisci questa pagina / Send this page / Envíar este pagina |
