Anti-Gay Melee in Jamaica
12/04/2007, ANDY HUMM According to eyewitnesses in Jamaica, “The violence began in this most recent incident when a number of mourners at the funeral objected to the presence of persons they claimed to be gays and lesbians. Some persons left the church and returned some minutes later with a crowd with machetes and knives from a nearby community. They surrounded the church and threw missiles (rocks and objects) at some of the mourners through a window at the back of the church. A fight ensued, with some of the mourners retaliating against the attacking crowd. In order to avoid injury, attendees were required to make a fast exit. As they were exiting, some were beaten, shot at, and pursued.†— Rev. Nancy L. Wilson Moderator, Metropolitan Community Churches At a funeral at a church outside Mandeville, Jamaica, for Kirk Wayne, the choir director of the Sunshine Cathedral Metropolitan Community Church on Easter Sunday, violence broke out when some mourners "objected to the presence of people they claimed to be gays and lesbians," according to a written eyewitness statement circulated by the Reverend Nancy Wilson, moderator of the denomination. "Some persons left the church and returned some minutes later with a crowd with machetes and knives from a nearby community," the witness said. "They surrounded the church and threw missiles (rocks and objects) at some of the mourners retaliating against the attacking crowd. In order to avoid injury, attendees were required to make a fast exit" where they were "beaten, shot at, and pursued." Wilson called on religious leaders and others to speak out against this attack and "the escalating violence directed against Jamaica's LGBT community." "Sunday's incident follows an assault on alleged homosexuals attending the Montego Bay Nite Out Carnival last week, as well as another incident outside a pharmacy in Kingston in February," RJR94FM reported. 12/04/2007 - Fonte: Gay City news / http://www.gaycitynews.com Spedisci questa pagina / Send this page / Envíar este pagina |
